Project Example: Paul Shaskan

The following is an excerpt from Paul’s story.

Many Brooksville residents are familiar with the area's largest art show, Art in the Park, but not all are lucky enough to personally know Paul Shaskan– one of the great people who are behind the success of the show. Paul joined the Hernando County Arts Council in 2012. With over 70 years of experience as a renowned landscape artist, Paul is best known as the creative soul behind Art in the Park, an event he co-chaired with Jan Knowles, another local legend, for more than two decades.

Although Paul has spent many of his years dedicated to the arts, his life before was filled with another type of success. His career as a stockbroker was full and taught him many things he carried along with him into the world of art. After retiring in 1996, he and his wife Karen moved to Hernando County, where Paul quickly became a beloved figure in the local art scene. He discovered the Spring Hill Art League and served as Chair of its annual Fall Festival of the Arts for ten years.

For 20 years, Paul was a passionate advocate for the creation of a county-wide, multi-purpose cultural center. His vision and dedication have transformed Art in the Park into the celebrated event we know today. This annual festival is not just about fine art and craftsmanship; it's about community, tradition, and the enduring impact of one man's commitment to the arts.

People like Paul, who dedicated decades to their passion, leave a lasting legacy that will be felt by generations to come. His work ensures that the arts will continue to thrive in our community for generations to come. Join us in celebrating Paul's incredible contributions and the vibrant arts scene he has helped to cultivate in Hernando County.
